In-Wall Loudspeaker of the Year

Like on-walls, in-wall loudspeakers are in the midst of a renaissance. Once
characterized by tinny sound, cheapo divers, and flimsy plastic trim rings, the product
niche has improved by leaps and bounds, driven primarily by the surging custom
installation market. The best in-walls offer sound quality equal to or better than many
freestanding loudspeakers—at hefty prices. That’s what makes the Angstrom
Ambienti AV-6.5 so exceptional; it not only performs at levels comparable to more
intrusive big-box designs, it does so at an almost laughably accessible price.
Featuring a rigid, ribbed front baffl e, a fabric dome tweeter, Vectran woofer, and
audiophilegrade crossover network, the little Ambienti offers excellent power
handling, superb dynamics, and tremendous amounts of detail without ever
sounding edgy—no matter how hard it’s pushed. Tonal balance remains constant
regardless of volume, an exceptional capability not shared by many far more
expensive products. Not capable of reaching the bottom octave, the AV-6.5 works
best with a powered subwoofer handling bass duties. The bass that it does deliver is
impressive, with a surprising amount of punch. The two-piece frame-and-baffl e
construction is an installer’s delight, and Angstrom includes a hook tool with each
speaker for removing the perforated metal grille.
